Cable operators are looking at next-generation broadband speeds up to 6 gigabits per second, Multichannel News reports.

That would be possible if there was an entirely new way of conceiving data-over-coax transmission, the article says, noting that the entity investigating the idea is CableLabs, which develops this kind of technology for the cable owners, who also own CableLabs.

The article also warns that, "CableLabs currently is only investigating the approach, and the work might not ever result in a technical specification. Also, this new data-oriented technology likely would not be compatible with current DOCSIS cable modem equipment."
