ABC’s "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" has put some of its participants in tough financial spots, as the lavish houses the show has built for certain family has crushed them under higher mortgage, tax and utility debt, the Wall Street Journal reports. Producers are scaling back their "extreme" efforts in order to lessen the burden on the show’s families, nixing former staples like swimming pools, extravagant landscaping and replacing them with cost-effective solar panels and low-flow toilets.
The average "Makeover" house now is 2,800 to 3,000 square feet. Compare that to a 2005 renovation that became a 5,300 square foot castle, complete with five bedrooms, seven bathrooms, five fireplaces and an outdoor kitchen.
I wish they’d do my home over. It’s paid for, and I can afford the taxes. Just can’t swing the “makeover” part! ;>)
