Showtime has picked up the drama "Shameless," based on the British series of the same name, the Hollywood Reporter reports.

Showtime is giving "Shameless" a 12-episode order. The show focuses on a recession-suffering Chicago family with an alcoholic father, played by William H. Macy and an never-there mother. Their 18-year-old daughter, played by Emmy Rossum, ends up in charge of her five younger siblings.

The British version of the show has been running for seven seasons on Channel 4.

  1. Even if it’s on showtime, I don’t think they’ll be able to match the sheer pathos of the “lower classes” that the original hits with every episode. The setup of having this be a “recession” situation kind of tips us off that this is a family that’s become “down and out”, unlike the family in the original who have always been that way and probably always will be. Still, with Macy, it’ll be interesting to see what he does with the character of the father (who is an absolutely unrepentant individual in the UK series).
Everyone do yourself a favor and find the original online or DVD. It’s worth the effort.
