‘South Park’ Episode Edited in Light of Muslim Group’s Death Threats

An episode of Comedy Central’s "South Park" featuring the character of the Muslim prophet Muhammad was altered after the show’s creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, delivered the episode for broadcast, the New York Times reports.

Discussion about Muhammad was featured in last week’s episode (with the Prophet’s face not shown on screen, but depicted in a giant bear costume), which prompted Muslim group Revolution Muslim to post on its web site that Stone and Parker could end up like film maker Theo Van Gogh. Van Gogh was killed in 2004 in Amsterdam after making a film that discussed the abuse of Muslim women in some Islamic societies.

The episode, "201," sported numerous bleeps and censor bars regarded Muhammad, but it is unclear which censored elements were put in by design and were put in after the fact by Comedy Central.

Comedy Central did comment, confirming that it did add additional bleeps, and is not giving permission to South Park Studios to air the episode on its web site. The network also pulled a midnight encore of the episode on Wednesday.

  1. Yet there is nary a complaint from the press. 🙁

  2. I just think it’s hilarious that now the name Mohamed is considered equivalent to the word sh*t by network censors.

  3. It it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck…
