‘Ugly Betty’ Star Says ABC Didn’t Do Enough to Prevent Cancellation

Apr 1, 2010  •  Post A Comment

ABC’s "Ugly Betty" is through at the end of this season, and one of its cast members said he believes the show had a lot more seasons in it, if ABC had done more to help it out.

Tony Plana, Betty’s dad on the series, told the Palm Beach Post that "Betty’s" critical success should have been enough to prove the show’s value.

"It should have run longer – it was one of the most critically acclaimed shows. What was an experiment turned out to be a hit, and it deserved a longer run, based on the accolades. I don’t think enough was done to sustain us on the air," he said.

Despite the cancellation, Plana said he hopes other networks will embrace multicultural programs like "Betty" in the future.

  1. I SURE WISH THEY WOULD HAVE DONE MORE ALL THE SHIFTING AROUND COULD NOT FIND A GOOD SPOT I STILL SAY SAVE IT IT’S WORTH IT!!

  2. ABC killed “Ugly Betty” by switching it around on its schedule and not doing any promotion whatsoever, It almost seemed as if they killed this wonderful show on purpose. They complained about bad ratings and used them as a reason for cancelling it, but they did everything they could to prevent people from watching. It’s not the first time ABC has done this (e.g. “Men in Trees” and “October Road”). We’re stuck w/ silly reality programs and junk. Shame on ABC.

  3. I 100% agree. Even if the second season wasn’t as strong as the first and ratings suffered behind that, ABC should have moved the show to lead-off Wednesdays instead of anchor Fridays. That was stupid on their part.
The show deserved better. Tony Plana is so very right.

  4. I’m so happy this show was cancelled. They used to shoot on my street and their cherry picker light crews banged against my bedroom window terrifying me and waking my family. Horrible. Let’s have another season of LOST.

  5. They promoted it obsessively. And they owned the show so it was good for them to help it hit. It wasn’t a hit. Enough.

  6. How foolish of ABC to ruin the Ugly Betty franchise with its schizophrenic time and day changes of the hit comedy. Someone should tell them that US Latinos are projected to be a TRILLION dollar buying block by this year – 2010. Not smart…
