‘Glee’ Co-Creator Murphy Calls for Newsweek Boycott Over Gay Actor Criticism

May 12, 2010  •  Post A Comment

‘Glee" co-creator Ryan Murphy is calling for a boycott of Newsweek after a column in the magazine questioned the believability of gay actors playing straight parts, the New York Times’ ArtsBeat blog reports.

The Newsweek column specifically singled out "Glee" star Jonathan Groff, who plays the straight singer Jesse St. James, as giving a performance that "feels off." "In half his scenes, he scowls—is that a substitute for being straight? When he smiles or giggles, he seems more like your average theater queen," wrote Ramin Setoodeh, who is gay. Groff’s character’s interactions with his girlfriend Rachel are "so distracting, I’m starting to wonder if Groff’s character on the show is supposed to be secretly gay."

The column had also attracted an angry response from Kristin Chenoweth, who has also appeared on "Glee" and who called the article "horrendously homophobic." Setoodehwrote in response that the criticisms had missed his point, which is "it’s often hard for us to accept an openly gay actor playing a straight character."

  1. If Setoodeh thinks that his acting is off, he should say so and explain his issues. That is legitimate criticism. But to blame it on his sexual orientation is offensive and shows a lack of class.
