Google and partners Intel Corp., Sony Corp. and Logitech International will demonstrate technology that that will allow television viewers to switch seamlessly between shows, YouTube videos and home videos, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The software, called Smart TV, will be built into Internet-connected TV sets, Blu-ray players as well as set-top boxes, although it’s not clear when such devices will be in stores.

The new TV platform will be demonstrated at a San Francisco technology conference to 3,000 programmers, with the goal of inspiring some to write programs for the platform. Google plans to give out development tools to independent software designers, in a bid to replicate the way smart phone applications have boomed.
