Simon Cowell: He Finally Predicted the Winner of ‘Idol’–Sorta

May 27, 2010  •  Post A Comment

Simon Cowell, who missed picking the person who would be crown "American Idol" in 2008 and 2009, was somewhat better this year–depending upon when you asked him.

As the season was heading to wrap up, he thought Crystal was going to win, he told Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show. Then Lee came on strong. So he told Ellen that Lee would win.

But after Tuesday’s blowout performance by Crystal, Cowell thought Crystal would win.

Then last night, after Lee was announced as the winner, Cowell was overheard to say, "I cannot believe Lee beat Crystal…I’m outta here!"

Lots and lots of folks wrote about Wednesday night’s "American Idol’ finale, with Simon Cowell’s last appearance as a judge on the show.

In case you missed the show and don’t have the time/desire to watch it, or just want to re-live the show from the point of view of a reporter who was at the Nokia Theater watching it live, here’s one of the written accounts of the show we liked. It’s by John Young at Entertainment Weekly’s Popwatch.

Near the end of his account, after Lee was announced as the winner, Young wrote: "Crystal walked over to the Top 12, which embraced her. And then the Top 12 moseyed on over to Lee, who had to jump into his rendition of ‘Beautiful Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay’ while an avalanche of confetti threatened to crush him. After thanking the audience for its support, Lee headed toward a TV camera to record his immediate post-winning-American-Idol reaction. I waited around in my chair, hoping to witness one final image to bring this season to its proper close. And there it was: Simon, Kara, Ellen, and Randy enjoying one last group hug. It lasted a good five seconds, or just long enough for Simon to remark, ‘I cannot believe Lee beat Crystal… I’m outta here.’

  1. If American Idol is a talent show, it is losing its legitimacy based on the last two years. Judged on pure raw talent, Adam Lambert should have won last year and Crystal Bowersox should have won this year. Instead, teenage girls voted with their hearts not their heads and we ended up with Kris Allen and Lee Dewyze. What a shame.

  2. This is why it’s called American Idol. Not America’s Greatest Talent or America’s Purest Rawest Talent.
Idol: a material effigy that is worshipped; someone who is adored blindly and excessively; paragon: an ideal instance; a perfect embodiment of a concept.

  3. The final shot was everything wrong with Idol. Too many judges trying to one-up each other and dominate the show. By giving confusing and conflicting advice contestants who should move on get voted off and those that should be voted off move on. The show has become more about the judges and the guest star “coaches” and less about the contestants. Turn it back to kids and the show’s ratings will improve.

  4. Nice!! Great Ifo. Great People. Great Blog. Thank you for all the great sharing that is being done here.

  5. I’m a little drunk and also bored. Sorry for writing stupid comments but this page really kicks ass.
