The fate of New Jersey’s public television is up in the air after Gov. Chris Christie wrote in his budget plan that he intends to cut its $11 million annual state subsidy, the Star-Ledger reports.
Since Christie proposed the budget cut, there’s been no detailed explanation about how the split would happen — for instance, who would own the licenses or how property would be divided.
But the bigger questions may center on whether New Jersey Network, one of the largest statewide public broadcasting networks in the U.S., can carry on. says the article, "Can NJN, founded in 1969, survive on its own, and would its Jersey-centric mission change if it changed from a state- to community-licensed broadcaster? And if it can’t survive — or if its programming is sharply curtailed — will anyone notice?"
It might be cheaper just to mail the ETV budget to each of the 3,000 actual viewers/listeners of public broadcasting in NJ and let them buy their own high-brow media.
