A former political operative who also once was a writer and executive producer on "The West Wing" has gotten his own show during primetime on MSNBC, the Los Angeles Times Show Tracker blog reports.

Former Democratic aide Lawrence O’Donnell has been tapped to host a 10 p.m. program on MSNBC, replacing a repeat of Keith Olbermann’s evening show, the reports says. 

The move comes after O’Donnell had appeared as a regular substitute for Olbermann and worked as a political analyst for the network, the article says.

“He’s proven to connect with our audience,” said MSNBC President Phil Griffin.

The addition will give MSNBC a time-time block of left-leaning hosts, the story points out. O’Donnell, whose new should should appear in the next few months, had served as a top advisor to the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-N.Y.), among other political roles, before switching to working in television, where he was a writer and executive producer on "West Wing." He won an Emmy for his work on that show.
