Details of Hulu’s New Pay Service; The Big Surprise is That Even this Pay Service Includes Ads

Jun 30, 2010  •  Post A Comment

Hulu.com has added a pay service that will enable users to access complete seasons of shows such as “Glee,” “The Office” and “House,” reports the AP.

The service, HuluPlus, will cost $9.99 a month.

Users will still be able to see episodes of current TV shows for free on Hulu.com, according to the story.

One surprise in the Hulu plan is that users of the pay service will be subjected to advertising, along the same lines of the ads seen by users of Hulu’s free service. Hulu said it was necessary to keep the ads to keep the subscription price low.

The service will initially be available on an invitation basis on computers and through special apps for Apple iPads and iPhones and some Samsung Blu-ray players and TVs, according to the report. It is set to be available soon on Sony’s PlayStation 3 and some of Sony’s TVs and Blu-ray players. Plans are also reportedly in the works to bring the service to Microsoft’s Xbox.

Responding to pressure from media company parents, Hulu has changed the landscape slightly. Hulu CEO Jason Kilar wrote on the site in a message to customers, "For our end users, we’re offering them the most convenient way to access their favorite shows, on devices they love, in high definition, at a fair price. For our content partners, we offer revenues that compensate them fairly for bearing the cost of producing the shows we love."

  1. “Fair price”? Ads plus $10 a month? That seems like a not-inconsiderable price to pay. If there were oodles of older shows and hard-to-find series and Hulu became basically THE repository for all things TV, then that might be worth it. Maybe they will. That *would* be a wonderful thing.

  2. YAWN. I can pay for TV already on iTunes and Amazon and Zune. And there are no commercials.

  3. Meanwhile, in Hulu executive offices, six-figure dumasses in suits are touting “subscitption plus ad revenue streams” as the new content delivery paradigm. Only a handful of them secretly know that’s a crock, and are discreetly shorting Hulu stock.

  4. If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.
