Even at that high price it was only the second highest amount paid for a the handwritten lyrics to a Beatles song by Lennon. The record holder is "All You Need Is Love," which sold for the most money, $1.25 million in 2005.

The winning bid for "A Day in the Life" came from an American who asked that his or her name not be made public, the article said.

According to CNN, "A total of three bidders weighed in for the manuscript, taking over six minutes until the bidding ended. The double-sided single sheet of paper written in Lennon’s hand includes cross-outs and corrections, and chronicles the evolution of one of the most famous musical masterpieces by the Beatles."
