Sears to Offer Online Downloads of TV Shows and Movies, Competing with Apple

Jun 24, 2010  •  Post A Comment

In a move that will place it in competition with Apple, Sears, which owns Sears and Kmart stores, plans to start on an online store to sell downloads of television shows and movies, Bloomberg News reports.

The store will use technology from Sonic Solutions, whose RoxioNow system will be installed on electronic devices — from mobile phones to televisions — sold by Sears, the biggest U.S. department store, the report says.

Sonic also provides software for Best Buy’s online movie store, while Apple uses its own iTunes program. The move comes as digital downloads are expected to become bigger business than sales of DVDs and Blu-ray discs after 2015, the article points out.
