Watching TV on Your Cell Phone or PDA Poised To Become a Lot More Popular

Jun 1, 2010  •  Post A Comment

With free on-the-go television viewing from mobile phone screens popular everywhere except the United States in Europe, things may be about to change, the New York Times reports.

Resistance from operators and incompatible standards have hampered mobile-phone TV viewing in the U.S., but now some operators are rethinking the service as a way to keep customers. That’s because mobile phones need only a tiny receiver chip and a telescoping antenna to receive free digital or analog TV broadcasts, just like any television.

Thus, the article continues, the service doesn’t add an additional traffic burden onto an operator’s network, and offers a way to entice customers to stay. Samsung is working on a handset for Sprint that uses the U.S. mobile broadcast standard, and Sprint and nine broadcasters last month started a four-month trial in the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore area to send TV programming to mobile phones and other devices.
