After being trapped with his injured arm stuck in a boiler for 12 hours, a Connecticut man reflected on what fictional television character MacGyver would do to get out of the situation, reports People.com.
The answer he reached wasn’t a cleverly constructed device using gum and rubber bands, but self-amputation, the story says.
Jonathan Metz performed the self-amputation after getting his arm stuck in the boiler while working on it. He kept screaming for help, but realized after about 12 hours that help might not come. Thinking about what MacGyver might do, he decided he had to amputate, the story says.
Metz hoped he could have it reattached later. Metz made it part of the way through, and then passed out. He was rescued when his work colleagues reported him missing, and firefighters arrived and finished the amputation.
