WPIX-TV to Cut 6:30 P.M. Newscast with Jim Watkins and Kaity Tong, Less Than a Year After it Began

It’s been less than a year since WPIX-TV in New York started a 6:30 p.m. newscast, and now it’s cutting the program, reports the New York Daily News.

The half-hour news program was anchored by Jim Watkins and Kaity Tong. Watkins’ fate is up in the air as his contract expires in August, while Kaity Tong was named as a victim of age discrimination in a lawsuit filed by former news director Karen Scott, as reported earlier this week.

But the decision to scrap the newscast illustrates the difficulties with starting a news program in a new time period, as it never became a true ratings competitor in the time slot, the article says. The station will move its current 6 p.m. show, "Inside Edition," to 4 a.m. and air back-to-back repeats of "Friends" in the 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. hour.

  1. If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.
