A&E Goes ‘Beyond Scared Straight,’ Revives Acclaimed Juvenile Crime-Prevention Series

Based on the landmark "Scared Straight" documentary series, in which real convicts confronted juvenile offenders with the horrors of life behind bars, A&E has ordered a four-hour documentary from executive producer by Arnold Shapiro called "Beyond Scared Straight."

The original juvenile crime prevention program was an Oscar and Emmy Award winner. The new incarnation will be presented on A&E as a four-hour special event in winter 2011.

In a statement about the new series, Shapiro said, "I have seen so many teenagers turn their lives around after experiencing inmate-run prison programs like ‘Scared Straight’ that I am grateful for the opportunity to bring more of these programs and stories of transformation to television."
