Another Headache for Tiger Woods: Scandal Affects His TV Ratings As Well As His Golf Game

Aug 10, 2010  •  Post A Comment

Tiger Woods’ scandal may have also put a dent in his ability to attract television viewers, reports the New York Post.

During this past weekend’s Bridgestone Invitational, which ended on Sunday, Aug.  8, 2010, Woods both played the worst golf game of his career and saw ratings for the final round decline 51% compared to last year’s Bridgestone tourney, when Woods won the event, the story says.

The article notes,"But more telling, the ratings were down 34 percent from 2008 — when Woods did not even play in the tournament."

Furthermore, the article states, "Viewers want to see [Tiger] and when he does not, they turn off the set by the millions. But if the latest ratings trend holds up, the game has a new problem: people are tuning out rather than watching the one-time champion struggle and fail."

  1. This article is really misleading and makes a false conclusion.
Ratings were down this year because although Tiger was in the field, he was so far behind that his round was over before the TV coverage began. So he was not featured in the telecast. That is why ratings went down. Not because people tuned away from Tiger.

  2. An interesting take, Michael. We will know more when he finally is in a tournament again at a competitive level. Maybe this week at PGA or later at Ryder Cup. We will also be interested to see how Two and a Half Men does this year. Have the public suddenly gotten moralistic or are they still forgiving of athletes and stars.

  3. Well I, for one tuned in the golf hoping to see Tiger fail; thanks for cooperating. I always felt he had this smug superior air, and it is gratifying to see him come down to earth.

  4. Tiger seems depressed and cannot find inner peace and balance, but he brought it all unto himself with his sordid, reckless behavior!!! Tiger knows that he destroyed his marriage, the family unit, his brand and everything he worked so hard for something very worthless!!! Tiger knows everyone watching him knows who/ what he is!!!Tiger knows he tarnished his reputation and that his name will be forever linked to one of the biggest sex scandal in the history of sports!!! NO ONE CAN ESCAPE KARMA !!!

  5. Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  6. I love your blog.. very nice colors & theme. Did you create this website yourself or did you hire someone to do it for you? Plz reply back as I’m looking to create my own blog and would like to know wheere u got this from. thanks
