The Primetime Emmys made winners out of new comedies such as ABC’s "Modern Family" while favoring returning dramas such as AMC’s "Mad Men," reports the Los Angeles Times’ The Envelope blog.

"Modern Family" won the top comedy prize, the Emmy for outstanding comedy series, marking the first time in more than 20 years that an ABC comedy has received the honor, reports the New York Times. It also marked the end to the three-year dominance of NBC’s "30 Rock," the story adds. "Glee," Fox’s freshman comedy, scored two awards: one for Jane Lynch for supporting actress in a comedy and another for creator Ryan Murphy for comedy direction.

Both "Modern Family" and "Glee" are from Twentieth Century Fox Television.

On the drama side, AMC’s "Mad Men" from Lionsgate took home its third consecutive Emmy for drama series, while AMC’s "Breaking Bad" actor Bryan Cranston won his third leading acting Emmy for his starring role on the show.

One surprising upset of the evening was in the reality-competition category, which was won by "Top Chef," breaking a seven-year run of wins by CBS’ "Amazing Race," the New York Times points out.

The highly anticipated moment of Conan O’Brien getting on stage to needle his former bosses at NBC never happened, as Comedy Central’s "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" won the Emmy for best variety, music or comedy series for an eighth year, the article says. Still, the award show’s host, Jimmy Fallon, had a go at the late-night brou-ha-ha, when NBC pushed O’Brien off the air in favor of Jay Leno, in his monologue. “NBC asking a late-night host to go to L.A. to host another show. What could possibly go wrong?” O’Brien nodded to the camera, the story says.
