Former Sen. Ted Stevens, who helped shape the sweeping telecommunications bill in 2006 as chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, has died in a plane crash, The New York Times reports.
The Alaska Republican was killed Monday night in the crash of a small plane in southwestern Alaska, the story says. Five of the nine people on board were believed dead.
Sen. Stevens, the longest-serving Republican in the U.S. Senate, was 86.
