Edward Kean, the primary writer of the 1940s and 1950s children’s program the "Howdy Doody Show," has died at the age of 85, the Associated Press reports.

Kean is credited with creating the word "kowabunga" and also wrote the theme song, "It’s Howdy Doody Time," heard by millions of children during the show’s TV run from 1947 to 1960, the story says.

Kean died on Aug. 13 from complications of emphysema. Kean’s exclamation ‘kowabunga’ later became popular through its use by Bart Simpson on the animated series "The Simpsons," the article adds.
