Seven Reasons Fox Hasn’t Signed an ‘Idol’ Judge

It’s been more than half a year now since Simon Cowell announced back in January that he was leaving Fox’s “American Idol.” And Ellen DeGeneres is also out. Judging for the new season is set to begin in a few weeks. But Fox has not announced who the new judge lineup. What gives?

Our former TVWeek colleague James Hibberd, now with The Hollywood Reporter,  has spoken to his sources and compiled the seven biggest reasons insiders are citing to explain why the show has yet to name a replacement.

Here they are: ‘Idol’ is looking for well-known celebrities, and that’s tough; money; lots of executives trying to choose the judges; compatibility between the judges; chemistry (e.g. do they go with two performers, or a performer and a music producer); the time commitment celebrity judges would have to devote to the show; and the potential bugaboo celebrities might have about following in the footsteps and Simon Cowell and his fellow former judges. And oh, did we mention money?

  1. Forget Lopez.
Why not either go with another britain or, if you use your brain then think about ‘Nashville.’ The city has music experience oozing everywhere but no one thinks about them.

  2. They should consider Patti Austin for a slot. Saw her attitude and presence shine at the Bowl during a Beatles celebration. She certainly knows music.

  3. Actually the show should keep their mind focused on what it was supposed to be doing in the first place, Judging contestants. Call Rick Ruben or some other professional that could make these kids a good recording even if they do not win.

  4. Steve is right. Where the program has gone wrong the last few years is the focus on old and current stars and not creating a new star. The judges were virtually unknown when the show started and didn’t distract from the competition. This last few years the competition has been secondary to the singers. Get some people that are strong in the industry but not that well known that they have to preen for Twitter.

  6. Do you actually like movie star news? Not want it? Would you take long lunches from labor when you are aware about the recent issue of People hits the newstands? I waiting to figure out what number of folks actually find hollywood gossip interesting, and ways in which many quite simply feel the infatuation from it plain silly.
