ABC News Launches Initiative Focusing on World Health Issues

ABC News is launching a yearlong project to raise awareness of health issues affecting the poorest parts of the world, the AP reports.

The series, "Be the Change: Save a Life," will start in December and run through next year, according to the story.

The network said the series will involve reporting from across all ABC News platforms, with a special Web site dedicated to serve as a clearinghouse for information on the topic.

ABC News will spend more than $4.5 million on the project, the story reports. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is reportedly contributing another $1.5 million.

The network said Wednesday that the project will be led by news anchor Diane Sawyer and Dr. Richard Besser, who recently became the news division’s chief health and medical editor when Dr. Tim Johnson announced that he was stepping down.

Johnson said he is taking a lower profile at ABC News after 25 years on the job, according to a TVNewser report.

ABC News President David Westin commented on Johnson’s decision to semi-retire in a statement to the press: "Tim has been our guide and our voice on medical issues for 25 years. No one could have asked for a better one. But there are other things he is eager to do. … Tim has agreed to remain a part of ABC News as our senior medical contributor. He will continue to appear on our broadcasts from time to time and contribute to ABCNews.com."
