The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network–GLSEN–has chosen an ABC situation comedy to receive the Respect Award at Friday night’s conference in Los Angeles, reports Broadway World.

The award will be presented to “Modern Family” at a ceremony at the Beverly Hills Hotel, with Rob Reiner making the presentation.

The Respect Awards, held annually in Los Angeles and New York, recognize individual and corporate leaders who have helped propel GLSEN’s efforts to ensure safe schools for all of America’s students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.

"Modern Family" was selected because it portrays positive images and story lines that reflect a diverse America, including the depiction of a family headed by a gay couple.
