Do Consumers Want ‘Green’ TVs? We’ll All Find Out Soon

When it comes to purchasing a TV set, are consumers more interested in the largest, brightest picture, or in a TV set that is more environmentally friendly?

Well, we’ll all soon find out.

Those yellow energy guide tags that are currently plastered across most other big-ticket appliances in retail stores will make their way to television set showrooms next year, reports the Los Angeles Times’ Technology blog.

The Federal Trade Commission said on Wednesday that TV sets manufactured after May 10, 2011 must show EnergyGuide labels that tell consumers the device’s estimated annual energy cost and how that compares with similar TV sets, the article adds.

The reason for the labels is that today’s TV sets aren’t the same as your grandpa’s. “Unlike many years ago, before flat screens and plasma, today’s televisions vary widely in the amount of energy they use,” FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz said in a statement, the article notes.
