[Update 1:40 PM, PT, Oct 21, 2010: If you want  to see a video of Juan Williams back on Fox News responding to his firinig, please click here.]

Juan Williams has been fired as a news analyst by NPR for comments he made on "The O’Reilly Factor" on Fox News earlier this week, reports AOL news.

The comments are included in the video below.

Williams was speaking about O’Reilly’s comments on "The View" last week about Muslims and 9/11, when he said, "[W]hen I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous," the story says.

NPR said his remarks on the Fox News show "were inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as a news analyst with NPR."

According to the article, "Williams’ frequent appearances on ‘the largely conservative and often contentious prime-time talk shows of Fox News have long been a sore point with NPR News executives,’ the NPR website reported. Williams’ title was recently changed from correspondent to analyst after he took clear-cut policy positions in TV appearances and in newspaper columns."

Furthermore, the article says, "In February 2009, NPR asked that Williams stop being identified on ‘The O’Reilly Factor’ as a ‘senior correspondent for NPR,’ even though that title was accurate at the time, The New York Times reported.

The article continues, "At the time, NPR ombudswoman Alicia C. Shepard called Williams a ‘lightning rod’ because he ‘tends to speak one way on NPR and another on Fox.’ She told the Times that NPR received 378 listener e-mails in 2008 complaining about Williams."

  1. So NPR is firing someone for expressing personal opinions that don’t line up with corporate’s politics…

  2. I wonder if George Soros had something to do with this. That was a very nice donation he made to NPR.

  3. It’s sad when someone who toes the line for years makes just one comment one time that might be controversial loses his or her career just like that. In the interest of job security I’m going to take the 5th Amendment as to whether or not what scares Juan also scares me. If I say “Yes” I’ll get canned on one side, and if I say “No” I’ll get canned on the other side. It’s hard to navigate the dangers of political correctness these days.

  4. With a name like Juan Williams (is he half Hispanic, half African American?), how would he like it if other people said of him…”[W]hen I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are Hispanics/Blacks and I think, you know, they are in gangs and known thieves in society, I get worried. I get nervous…” Juan, they are extremists who happen to be Muslims. Look in the mirror and try to change prejudices, you so-called “journalist?”

  5. I wonder how many people saw the entire interview? In fact he was very politically correct and dare I say, balanced, in the full discussion. The fact NPR pulled out one sentence is an indication that they have been looking for an excuse to get out of that contract for a while.

  6. The whole issue of profiling is disturbing. But, the reality is that anyone intent on doing harm is not going to dress like someone from the MiddleEast. They are going to try and look as inconspicuous as possible, so the whole craziness that is propetuated by the likes of O’Rreilly is moronic. Sounds like this guy had been bitten by that insanity bug.

  7. JUAN WILLIAMS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FIRED BECAUSE HE WAS IN TO TALK GARBAGE FOR WHITE FOLKS.

  12. Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

  13. Is is full hispanic and full black. He is originally from Panama. His parents immigrated when he was 4.

  17. No, because all the currency rate are adjusted to prevent such arbitrage opportunity as you have mentioned. Not to mention you’ll need to pay for the transaction as well. The idea is this, the world of finance is so efficient at one point in time, that any good money-making opportunity around would have already been long exploited by the experts/professionals.
