Reporting Strong Demand for Postseason Baseball from Advertisers, Fox Says 2010 Is ‘Miles Ahead of Last Year’

In reporting strong demand from advertisers for time during Fox’s postseason baseball coverage, the network says that the level of sales is "miles ahead of last year," the New York Times’ Media Decoder blog reports, citing Fox Sports senior vice president Lou D’Ermilio.

Fox will air the National League Championship Series, which begins on Oct. 16, as well as the World Series, which kicks off on Oct. 27, the story says. About 90% of commercial time is already sold for the games, a much faster rate than last year and as much as 30% ahead of the pace for Fox’s games in 2008, the article notes.

Part of what’s playing into demand is the proliferation of homes with HDTV sets, as homes with such TV capabilities tend to watch more sports. Another reason may be the recession, as baseball fans are opting to watch games at home as a money-saving technique, rather than to go out to sports bars or restaurants to watch, the article says.

The story notes that Fox is asking about $450,000 for each 30-second spot in the World Series, compared with prices in the $400,000 to $425,00 range for the 2009 World Series on the network. Meanwhile, Fox is asking about $225,000 for each 30-second spot during the National League Championship Series

  1. Live sports programming is the one thing that doesn’t work well on DVR or through the ethernet. Over the next ten years you can expect to see more advertisers turning to sports where they can be fairly sure that there is still a captive audience that will be watching their ads.

  2. Very informative, thanks for clearing up some issues for me! 🙂

  3. Say whatever you want, but the Giants will win the World Series! The 49ers have been the biggest flop in the NFL, redemption time for SF!
