Tom Hanks’ Sci-Fi Project To Be Animated and Online

After testing marionettes and talking with U.S. studios and networks about partnering on his sci-fi project, Tom Hanks has settled on animation and a partnership with Reliance Big Entertainment of India for his online series, called "Electric City," reports the New York Times’ ArtsBeat blog.

According to the article, Hanks said he came up with the idea for a series about six years ago, conceiving of it as a "a very gripping, almost film-noir, very serious look at a future that was not a dysfunctional dystopia, that an awful lot of the future things are."

Hanks tried to make the series with marionettes but discovered using puppets is both "hard to do and takes forever," the story says.

The animated series will be placed online in 20 three-minute segments early next year, the story says, and focus on themes such as energy consumption and freedom of information.

Reliance, a Mumbai-based company that last year provided $325 million to DreamWorks for creating international films, attracted Hanks by pointing out the large Indian audience, which is used to watching short content on their phones, the story adds.
