Universal Pulls Vince Vaughn Movie Trailer After Anderson Cooper Blasts Its Use of the Word ‘Gay’

Oct 8, 2010  •  Post A Comment

Universal Studios has pulled a trailer for Vince Vaughn’s new comedy “The Dilemma” out of theaters after CNN’s Anderson Cooper criticized the clip for its negative use of the word "gay," E! Online reported.

The studio said in a statement: "The teaser trailer for ‘The Dilemma’ was not intended to cause anyone discomfort. In light of growing claims that the introduction to the trailer is insensitive, it is being replaced. A full trailer, which has been in the works for some time, will post online later today."

Here is the original trailer, although we don’t know how long it will remain available as the studio is apparently trying to remove the promo from circulation.

  1. Hilarious. The word ‘gay’ meant ‘happy’ for decades, until the homosexual community appropriated its use to mean ‘homosexual’ — which was a clear case of usurping a word. Now among younger people the word ‘gay’ has come to mean ‘stupid’ (which is no more usurping a word than having changed its meaning from ‘happy’ to ‘homosexual’) and guess who’s bent out of shape about it?
Words change their meaning and complaining about it is fruitless. Maybe that’s a bad choice of words.

  2. IS ANDERSON A TOP OR BOTTOM?

  3. Actually, Doug, the gays “appropriated” the word “gay” in order to promote it as a substitute for the word people like you preferred: “f*gg*t.” And it wasn’t some natural linguistic evolution that caused the word “gay” to “come to mean stupid” (actually, Doug, as it’s used in the trailer and by a lot of adolescents, it means “lame,” which is not the same thing). Kids and adults who think like kids chose “gay” as a synonym for “lame” precisely because of its use as a label for homosexual people. People like you, Doug, who rise up on both hind legs to deliver lectures based on a proud and willful ignorance–and feel no shame in posting such garbage on a public site– are evidence that the gays have a long way to go. Also that the folks who remind us that freedom of speech means freedom for the most abohorrent speech aren’t kidding.
Oh, and the movie looks awful.

  4. What happened to freedom of speech? Using the word “Gay” is not offensive! I’m so sick of the “political correct” BS that we have adopted in this country! EVERYTHING offends someone!!! I am gay, I am queer, I am a fag, I am a butt pirate! So what!!! I don’t get offended, I am what I am! Lighten up people!!!

  5. Dean, tell that to the kids who committed suicide over the taunting they received. Oh, right, I guess it’s too late for that.

  6. Dude (from the Sean Penn “Spicollo” inspired usage meaning you’re so not being a dude right now),
Even if you disagree with Doug, you’re acting as if he’s up there with Goebbels when his point–the tautology–was interesting, asexually.

  7. ***** This post has been removed for using the word gay to describe the complaints of Anderson and the subsequent pulling of the trailer******

  8. Doug, you put a smile on my face. Thank you! My father, who would be 90 if he was still with us, was always irritated about the “loss of the perfectly good word, gay”. He was a writer and then an editor in his early years. Thanks for the memory!
I think it is very sad that we have come to a point where the “in” group gets to choose the meaning of a word, and the rest of us have to go a long….but the “in” group gets to use it however they want…. I can’t believe that compared to all the other stuff they say on TV and in the movies that this even matters.
    And I can’t resist:
As a Blonde I am sick of the expression “they are just being a blonde”. how insulting ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. Dear “Anti-Doug? What’s Up With You?”:
Comparison to Goebbels: yours, not mine. I explained to Doug that “that’s so gay” equating “gay” with “lame” is a slur, and not by accident. The rest is sh*t you added. You can keep it. His tautology: nonexistent. The concept of tautology: beyond you, apparently.
    Dear Jen:
With all due respect to your late father, the word “gay” hasn’t been “lost,” it’s just acquired another meaning, something words do all the time by gradual consensus. “Gay” still means “happy,” still means “festive,” still means “cheery;” for the last few decades, it has also meant “of or pertaining to people of same-gender sexual orientation,” which only counts as a “loss” if you think people like that are icky (please do not enlighten us further on your opinion in that regard). It’s the use of the word “gay” as a synonym for “lame” that has many people of all sexual orientations angry, because the schoolyard Einsteins who chose “gay” to mean “lame” chose it because, not in spite of, its longtime wide use as a descriptive for people of same-gender sexual orientation. They didn’t choose “index card” or “pistachio” or “Jen,” because those words weren’t derogatory enough. They chose the most insulting term they could think of: “gay,” as in “we’re not allowed to say ‘that’s so f*gg*t,’ so here’s the next best thing.”
Dear Everyone who thinks protests over use of the word “gay” to mean “lame” trample their First Amendment and/or freedom of speech rights:
Please return immediately to your high school social studies classroom, where you were supposed to learn that only the government can trample on your First Amendment rights. When Universal removes an offending line of dialog, that’s “editing.” When it sh*tcans the whole trailer, that’s “a business decision.”
Oh, and Jen: your contention that the gays are the “in” group proves only that 1) you’re straight and 2) you are not even close to paying attention to the world around you. So I’ll leave you with the words of that great philosopher, Jack Nicholson* (in “As Good As It Gets”):
“Sell crazy someplace else. We’re all stocked up here.”
    * = Actually, Mark Andrus and James L Brooks, but you know…
