Stars of NFL Dominate Sunday Ratings

Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Michael Vick and Eli Manning were among the marquee stars of the National Football League who delivered big Nielsen ratings Sunday, according to TVbytheNumbers.com.

NBC and CBS each benefited from football broadcasts, with NBC winning the night easily while CBS saw its numbers jolted by an 11-minute overrun of the tight battle between Brady’s New England Patriots and Peyton Manning’s Indianapolis Colts.

NBC wound up with a 6.6 rating for the night in the 18-49 demo, far outpacing ABC (3.7), CBS (3.4) and Fox (2.5). NBC also won total viewers, with an average of 17.6 million for the night to CBS’s 13.5 million, ABC’s 10.8 million and Fox’s 5.5 million.

CBS’s numbers are skewed by the 11-minute NFL overrun at 7 p.m., and the report cautions against relying on the overnights for anything other than a general trend. Nonetheless, the site reports for the 7 p.m. hour that CBS’s overrun of the Patriots-Colts game paired with the start of "60 Minutes" to earn a 4.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic for the hour. NBC’s pregame show collected a 3.5 and ABC’s "America’s Funniest Home Videos" a 1.9, both in the 18-49 demo, for the hour.

At 8 p.m. NBC’s game between Eli Manning’s New York Giants and Vick’s Philadelphia Eagles kicked off with a solid 7.1 rating in the 18-49 demo, towering over the first hour of ABC’s "2010 American Music Awards," which had a 3.9 in the same demo. CBS’s "60 Minutes" and "Amazing Race" overlapped and combined for a 3.1 in the 18-49 demo for the hour, while Fox’s "The Simpsons" and "Cleveland Show" had a 2.9 rating and a 2.4, respectively, in the same demo.

The Giants-Eagles game on NBC continued to lead at 9 p.m. with a 7.8 rating in the 18-49 demo, while the "AMAs" had a 4.6 in the same demo. "Amazing Race"/"Undercover Boss" on CBS averaged a 3.3 in that demo, and Fox’s "Family Guy" and "American Dad" had a 3.3. rating and a 2.3, respectively, in 18-49.

Football on NBC wrapped the night with a 7.9 rating for the 10 p.m. hour in 18-49, compared with a 4.2 for the "AMAs," while CBS’s "Undercover Boss"/"CSI: Miami" trailed with a 2.4 average rating in the 18-49 demographic.
