Uh Oh. Daylight Savings Ends Next Weekend–Better Not Depend on Your iPhone 4 to Wake You

Nov 1, 2010  •  Post A Comment

As daylight savings time has begun in other places around the world, such as in Australia and New Zealand and has ended in other countries, such as  the United Kingdom, a software bug in Apple’s iPhone 4’s has been revealed.

In the U.K, they ended daylight savings over this past weekend. A story in today’s U.K publication the Telegraph says, "Although the time on the iPhone 4 automatically updated when the clocks went back at the weekend, it seems the alarm function didn’t, resulting in scores of people being woken an hour later than they had intended today.

"A similar bug affected iPhone 4 users in Australia and New Zealand when clocks switched from daylight saving time last month. The glitch could strike again next week when the United States adjusts its clocks to mark the start of winter."

The article says Apple has not commented on this glitch. But the story adds that here is the fix:

"iPhone 4 users can circumvent the alarm bug by deleting all alarms and creating new alarm alerts. Editing existing alarms will not resolve the problem."

The article does not say whether this glitch affects earlier versions of the iPhone.

  1. A correction to your article about the time change, the United Kingdom set their clocks
“back” this past weekend, while Australia
and New Zealand set their clocks ahead to
begin their daylight savings time in October,
since their days are longer as they are into
Spring and soon Summer since it’s south of
    the equator.

  2. Daylight SAVING time has no “s” at the end of “saving,” TV Week!

  3. Hi Darrell. You are correct…Good point. We’ll correct in the article.
    Thanks, Chuck

  4. Hi Derrick. Our dictionary says either can be used. Probably the case where the singular is the original usage but so many folks use the plural now that both are acceptable. Thanks, Chuck

  5. Gentlemen: In a recent story, you mentioned “daylight savings time.” The correct description is “daylight saving time.” (No “s” at the end of “saving.”
An easy way to remember the correct way to spell it is to recall that “Savings are what you put in the bank. “Saving” is what we do with daylight.

  6. If you Google it, everything comes up with the “s” so Chuck wins!
