With a Mediocre Season, TV Broadcast Networks Decide Some Weaklings Are Keepers

Nov 18, 2010  •  Post A Comment

Given this season’s mediocre ratings, the television broadcast networks will keep around "many weaklings," while getting rid of seven of 21 new series by January, writes our friend Gary Levin at USA Today.

Writes Levin, "Combined, the Big 4 networks lost 3% of their audience (and 7% of young-adult viewers). But it’s worse than the numbers would suggest; outsized gains for a handful of programs, including ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ ‘The Middle’ and NFL football, are masking the mediocre performance of many newcomers and steep declines for aging hits such as ‘House’ and ‘Grey’s [Anatomy].’ "

Sam Armando of Starcom research unit SMGx told Levin, "Everything that’s lasting is middle-of-the-road."

For instance, NBC’s low-rated "Chase," "Law & Order: Los Angeles" and "Outsourced" will receive new time slots in January. Fox, which is down 17% since last fall’s ratings, is keeping the freshman "Raising Hope," but is expected to move it once "American Idol" returns in January.
