A Streak Worth Celebrating: For 15 Straight Years, One Morning Show Has Been Atop the Nielsen Ratings

It’s a milestone worth celebrating: for 15 years in a row, one morning show had been No. 1 in the Nielsen ratings.

NBC’s "Today" show will celebrate Saturday as marking 15 uninterrupted years as the country’s top-rated morning broadcast, reports TVNewser.com.

The winning streak started Dec. 11, 1995, when the show was anchored by Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel, the story notes. Matt Lauer was the show’s news reader and its executive producer was Jeff Zucker, then 30 years old.

The closest "Today" got to slipping from its No. 1 perch for wn entire season was in 2004-05, when ABC’s prime-time schedule including "Desperate Housewives" was on a winning streak, giving a boost to "Good Morning America," but the lead for "Today" has grown since, the story notes.
