One of the projects ABC has in development as a musical series is described as "St. Elmo’s Fire" meets "Rent," reports Nellie Andreeva at Deadline.com.
And that untitled project comes attached with four-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken ("The Little Mermaid," Beauty and the Beast," "Pocahontas" and "Aladdin") and two-time Oscar-nominated lyricist David Zippel ("Mulan," "Hercules").
The pair have teamed with writer Marco Pennette for the musical comedy, which would feature two to three original songs in each episode, the story says.
The story, based on Menken’s daughter, tracks a young female musician as she and other young musicians try to find success, and will feature the characters breaking into song as well as performing set pieces, the article notes.
It marks one of three music-themed projects in development at ABC, which is also working on a drama with musical elements that stars Tony winner Idina Menzel and a musical comedy from "Sharpay Fabulous" writer Robert Horn, the story notes.
