One of the movies in the original “Star Wars” trilogy and a hugely successful John Travolta disco movie are among the latest selections by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Film Registry, the AP reports.

“The Empire Strikes Back,” the 1980 “Star Wars” sequel in which the relationship between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader is revealed, is one of the 25 movies chosen this year to be honored and preserved. Also on the list is the 1977 Travolta movie “Saturday Night Fever.” The Library of Congress announced its selections today.

The purpose of the registry is to preserve films with artistic, cultural or historical significance, the story says. More than 2,100 films were nominated this year.

Among the other selections announced today: the Watergate drama “All the President’s Men,” the Spike Lee biography “Malcolm X,” the Leslie Nielsen comedy “Airplane!” and the Robert Altman Western “McCabe & Mrs. Miller.”

The registry includes a total of 550 films.
