Interest Groups Want FCC to Delay Comcast-NBCU Merger, Examine Past Comcast Deals

Dec 29, 2010  •  Post A Comment

Public-interest groups are asking the Federal Communications Commission to defer action on Comcast’s merger with NBC Universal until Comcast makes its programming contracts available going back to 2006, reports B&C.

The groups, including the Media Access Project and Free Press, sent a letter to FCC Chairman Julius Genchowski dated Tuesday that pointed out that the chairman testified in March that the FCC makes merger decisions "only after we compile and review a full record."

The groups pointed out that Comcast hasn’t complied with the FCC’s request for information on certain programming contracts struck since 2006, the article adds. The groups want to be able to view them and comment on them, as well as giving the FCC’s staff a chance to review them, the story points out.

A Comcast representative didn’t have a response to the letter, but referred to the company’s response last month to a similar charge from Bloomberg. Comcast said then that the charge was a last-minute maneuver to derail the deal and that it hadn’t refused to produce the documents. Instead, Comcast said the production of the documents had been "deferred after conversations with commission staff."
