Powerful L.A. Congressman Pushes FCC for Vote on Comcast-NBCU Merger by Year-End, Asks for Conditions

A powerful congressman representing part of Los Angeles is asking the Federal Communications Commission to vote on the Comcast-NBCU merger by year-end, albeit with several conditions, reports TheWrap.com.

Democratic Rep. Henry Waxman is asking for assurances that smaller cable and satellite companies have access to programming and channels in which Comcast has a compelling interest; guarantees that Comcast won’t push ahead its own video-on-demand services over smaller companies; protection for unaffiliated programmers concerned about discrimination in channel placement; and measures that boost opportunities for independent writers, producers and directors, the story says.

Comcast was noncommittal about Waxman’s proposed conditions, even though his push for a vote aligns him with Comcast’s own desired timeline for the merger, the story says.
