Study Reveals Which Cable News Net Has the Most Misinformed Viewers

Dec 17, 2010  •  Post A Comment

A new study from the University of Maryland concluded that viewers of one cable news network were "significantly more likely" than other news consumers to believe misinformation about politics, reports the Huffington Post.

The network is Fox News, whose critics have blasted its news coverage as slanted while mocking the channel’s long-running “Fair and Balanced” slogan. Now those critics may have some numbers to back up their claims.

The research also determined that increased viewership of Fox News led to increased belief in false stories.

Among the false statements presented in the survey were claims that President Obama may not have been born in the U.S., that the auto bailout occurred only under Obama’s tenure, and that most economists estimate the stimulus caused job losses.

One statement where Fox viewers were considerably more likely to believe misinformation–31 points higher than the rest of respondents–concerned health care, with the survey statement saying falsely that most economists have estimated the health care law will worsen the deficit.

  1. This report isn’t exactly surprising or good news.
It does, however, reflect a troubled, misinformed and intellectually lazy society. Unfortunately, it’s the people in the culture who elect these politicians.

  2. The U. of MD is generally very liberal school. It would be interesting to see the study itself. As far as believing that “most economists have estimated the health care law will worsen the deficit”, I hate to burst the U. of M’s bubble but even the Congressional Budget Office estimates the Obama Heathcare Enema (when you stick an enema in, you know what always comes out), will significantly increase the deficit. I guess if someone’s answer didn’t agree with the professor’s pre-conceived ideas they were misinformed (even if they were correct on their facts). The truth should never get in the way of a good press release.

  3. You must be a Fox viewer proving the studies’ findings. If you go to the CBO website you will find that they estimate a $143 billion REDUCTION in the federal deficit as a result of healthcare legislation. Did you bother to research what Fox fed you or just gulp it down because it’s easier than working to be informed?
