Ratings: ABC, CBS Find Viewers Receptive to Fresh Lineups

ABC launched a new season of “Wipeout” Thursday night and came away with a win for the night in the 18-49 demo, while CBS won the battle for most total viewers with a prime-time lineup of fresh sitcoms and dramas, TVbytheNumbers.com reports.

ABC finished the night with a 3.6 average rating in the 18-49 demo, edging CBS’s 3.4 average. The other networks, airing mostly repeat programming, came in well off the pace, with Univision, NBC and Fox all tied with 1.2 average ratings. In total viewers, CBS came out on top in a two-horse race with an average of 13.8 million to ABC’s 10.3 million. The closest competition was Fox with 4.0 million.

CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory” was the top show of the night with a 4.4 rating in the 18-49 demo, airing at 8 p.m., followed by the network’s “$#*! My Dad Says” with a 2.9. Airing opposite those two comedies, the season premiere of “Wipeout” on ABC averaged a strong 4.2. Fox’s “Million Dollar Money Drop” managed only a 1.4 average rating in 18-49 in the same hour.

ABC came out on top in the 9 p.m. hour with a 4.2 average rating for “Grey’s Anatomy” in 18-49 to CBS’s 3.35 average for “CSI.” The other networks had repeats and were well behind.

CBS went back in front at 10 p.m. with a 3.0 average for “The Mentalist” in the adults 18-49 demo, while ABC held its own with a 2.75 average rating for “Private Practice.”
