A former drug addict who went into stand-up comedy and became one of the five finalists on the most recent season of NBC’s "Last Comic Standing" has died at the age of 44, the AP reported.

Mike DeStefano became a drug counselor after beating his drug addition, and later shifted gears to begin a career in comedy as a stand-up. He died Sunday, March 6, in New York, apparently after suffering a massive heart attack.

His death was sudden, coming just a few days before he was scheduled to appear off-Broadway in his one-man show, "A Cherry Tree in the Bronx."

  1. The first words in this article are:’A former drug addict who went into stand-up comedy…’ Are you kidding me?
There are about 700 articles/blogs reporting his death, and this and maybe five others open with his drug addiction, then describe his accomplishments in show business. I don’t think you gave this much thought, and that’s a shame.
