Obama Takes Swipe at Networks Over Birther Coverage

Apr 27, 2011  •  Post A Comment

At a widely televised news conference designed to squelch the “birther” issue and put to rest a media frenzy stirred up largely by Donald Trump, President Obama on Wednesday revealed his birth certificate and used the opportunity to take a swipe at the media, The Huffington Post reported.

Obama said he decided to release his birth certificate because the issue has been dominating news coverage in recent days, drowning out coverage of important issues such as the federal deficit and national security.

"I can’t get the networks to break in on all kinds of other discussions," he said. "I was just back there listening to [NBC’s Chuck Todd]–he was saying, it’s amazing that he’s not going to be talking about national security. I would not have the networks breaking in if I was talking about that, Chuck, and you know it."

Obama said he knows the birther issue is not going to go away for a small number of U.S. citizens. But he added: "I’m speaking to the vast majority of the American people, as well as to the press. We do not have time for this kind of silliness. We’ve got better stuff to do. I’ve got better stuff to do."

  1. So why did he wait two years to produce the document? Stalling only made a folk hero our of Trump, who now claims to have bested the President (did what no one else could get him to do).
The media had no trouble dogging Bush over Texas Air National Guard alleged forgeries, but fell under Barack’s spell on this issue.

  2. I don’t think it’s accurate to look at this as a racial issue. If Obama had been the son of a let’s say Russian man and a communist woman whose parents were communists and the son grew up to become a president who says he wants to fundamentally transform this nation and redistribute wealth and mocks people who “cling to their guns and god”, then some people who are philosophically and politically opposed to him would grab at any straw or conspiracy to try to get him out of office. It’s not the race; it’s the man and what he believes.

  4. I beg to differ. The entire foundation for all this birther nonsense may be boiled down to this: a Black man in the White House. Nothing more, nothing less.
Add to that a buffoon who thinks he could ever, EVER have the remotest of chances to be POTUS and you have a combustible mix of insanity.

  5. Now if Trump will reveal his true hairline…THAT would be news!
