Trump Accused of Racism as He Keeps Up Attack on Obama

Apr 28, 2011  •  Post A Comment

Donald Trump’s comments about President Obama reveal "an ugly strain of racism,’ according to Bob Schieffer, host of CBS News’ “Face the Nation.”

The Hollywood Reporter says Schieffer appeared Wednesday on “CBS Evening News” and criticized Trump, a potential contender for the Republican presidential nomination, for his recent comments about Obama.

Trump demanded for weeks that Obama reveal his birth certificate, and after Obama did so on Wednesday, Trump shifted his focus to whether Obama’s grades were high enough for him to earn acceptance into Columbia University and Harvard Law School, the piece says.

"I have friends who have smart sons with great marks, great boards, great everything, and they can’t get into Harvard," Trump said this week.

Schieffer said Trump’s comments are "code for saying he got into law school because he’s black," the story notes.

  1. Diversity admissions are nothing new, Donald. Move along.

  2. so donald… if it looks racist, walks racist, talks racist, acts racist, it must be racist…
this stuff just makes you look silly. how ’bout some real ideas to fix real problems…

  3. What about legacy admissions? That’s affirmative action for white people. Why isn’t The Donald flapping his yap about those? Oh right. Because The Donald is white.
And what about his son-in-law, whose father bought his way into Harvard with a $2.5 million donation? Can we talk about him?
Harvard doesn’t hand out magna cum laude degrees to graduates with terrible grades, no matter what a clown like Trump might have to say about it.

  4. Harvard Law is a private school and can admit anyone it wants. Even the AA admission have to pass the classes and the bar. Carnival barker, indeed!

  5. I’m no defender of Trump and I’m not going to do it now. That being said, I don’t think this proves anything about race. I think it’s this cartoon character willing to do or say anything to get attention. While I may agree with some of his politics (I’m conservative), I think he’s a egomaniacal nut who has no place in the White House. While I may disagree with Mr. Obama on just about everything, I think his characterization of Trump as a carnival barker rings pretty true.

  6. The American people only want to know the background of the man who is President. Who paid for and may have been instrumental in arranging the education of Mr. Obama is reasonable for people to ask – even if Mr. Obama was green! The media and Mr. Obama’s reelection campaign will try to make every issue a racial issue because that is what successfully got their candidate elected in the first place. Bob Schieffer’s total lack of journalistic integrity was evident when he decided to label the discussion as racist. Shame on him! Remember that Mr. Obama did not win the popular vote to be elected. The majority of people wanted these questions answered, but the system allowed Mr. Obama to be elected without providing the answers. I hope Mr. Trump keeps asking that the American people be provided with full background on all candidates including their birth, education, affiliations and health.

  8. Huh? Obama didn’t win the popular vote? Um, yes he did, by a large margin.
I think you’re thinking of George W. Bush in 2002, who lost he popular vote to Al Gore.

  9. Wow, Reality Check. Your comment would be so much more effective if you had facts. I don’t care if you like Obama or not, but as “Actual reality check” said, yes he did win the popular vote. As for Obama’s education, why is it the right of the American public to ask what happened 20+ years ago regarding his education? He got into school. However he got into school is irrelevant. What we do know is that he didn’t say “I’m going to be President in the future so you better let me in.”

  10. So the people who questioned G.W. Bush’s military service had no right to even ask, since it happened more than 20+ years prior to his election, right? I am sure you apply your logic consistently.
I, on the other hand, believe it is every American’s right, perhaps even responsibility, to find out as much as possible about the man or woman who would lead this nation, and there is hardly a question that would be off limits.

  11. Boycott Trump and NBC

Trump is a fraud. He has donated to more Democrats than Republicans, with Charlie Rangel receiving the most money.
Trump’s clothing is made in China.

  12. Completely irrelevant. One of Bush’s main “selling points” was that he was in the military, even though he didn’t do a thing in the military. Also, Bush was barely a C student at Yale and nobody really used that against him.
I’m neither conservative nor liberal, but god I hate seeing guys on both sides contradict themselves when calling out the other side on any issue.

  13. We don’t need his grades. We already know that he did not graduate cum laude, let alone magna or summa sum laude, as did Harvard Law Review editors *before* the change in diversity rules.
It might be easier for people to ignore Obama’s grades if he didn’t act so imperious all the time, like he’s the smartest guy in the room. If he was an average student, let him own it, as did C students Bush and Gore and D student Kerry.

  14. Trump: It is better for a man to keep his tongue in check and conceal his foolishness than to open up his well of pride and cause everyone to realize that a wealthy fool is more dangerous than any nuclear meltdown. Your statements will see you soon struggling to find a way to save your wealth after your precious properties on the east coast are destroyed by the storms you have drawn unto you. It would have been better for you to have jumped into a volcano. Remember, there were those who made fortunes in the Dark Ages and you are nothing more than extension of that infamous European era. In your famous words: “You’re fired.” Just remember when your pride has dealt you your fall; you fired yourself.
