Lukewarm Reception for Royal Wedding in U.S.

The wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton wasn’t enough of a draw to rouse most Americans from their beds early Friday morning, reports The New York Times’ ArtsBeat blog.

An average of 22.7 million viewers at home in the U.S. tuned in to watch the wedding live between 6 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. ET, which the piece says illustrates the "lukewarm interest" most Americans held for the wedding.

Nevertheless, the U.S. audience for the wedding was big enough to create a record ratings day for a few channels. CNN drew 1.66 million viewers between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m., giving the network its largest audience since the day after the 2008 presidential election, the story notes.

"Today" on NBC averaged more than 9.6 million viewers between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., giving the program its biggest audience since the day after the 2000 presidential election. There wasn’t immediate data on how many people watched the event through Web streaming.

  1. Who cares whether “America” was watching or not? For goodness sakes, I’m a proud American, but my goodness… we can sure feel entitled. I am sure that on her lovely wedding day, Kate was not thinking about how many “Amaricans” were watching her wedding. Huh!

  2. 22 million is lukewarm at 4am west coast? please. Isn’t this still twice the combined total of the average morning show audiences of NBC abc and CBS combined? I’m sure many folks DVR-ed it as well..
