Mark Burnett, the producer behind "Survivor" and "The Apprentice" is planning to take on what he’s calling the "most important project I have ever undertaken," a 10-hour scripted series based on the Bible, reports Bill Carter in The New York Times.
Burnett has a deal with the History Channel for the project, which will include five two-hour segments, each containing two or three biblical stories, the piece says. The series, which will be in production through next year and will be broadcast in 2013, was conceived by Burnett and his wife, actress Roma Downey of "Touched by an Angel," the article notes.
Burnett tells the publication that he was inspired by a recent viewing of Cecil B. DeMille’s "The Ten Commandments," which he hadn’t seen since he was a child.
“Once in a generation someone gets to breathe new visual life into that book,” Burnett said. While he wouldn’t disclose the project’s budget, he did predict that "this will have the biggest audience History has ever had."
