Latest Rumor About Canceled ABC Soaps

[UPDATED 1:15 p.m. PT to rewrite headline and clarify story to reflect that story is based on rumors.]

Reports surfaced last week that Sony TV, the production company behind NBC’s "Days of Our Lives" and CBS’s "The Young & the Restless," might be looking to poach talent from ABC’s two canceled soaps, "All My Children" and "One Life to Live." Now it turns out it might be something bigger than just a star grab–or at least that’s what some fans are hoping, reports SoapCentral.com.

Sony TV is rumored to be contemplating a pickup of "AMC" and "OLTL" with the thought of distributing the shows internationally. The rumor appears to have arisen from soap fans’ message boards and Twitter posts.

According to Dan J. Kroll of SoapCentral.com, "Neither ‘AMC’ nor ‘OLTL’ has been actively sold to overseas markets, where additional revenue is generated. Sony has successfully distributed ‘Days of our Lives’ and ‘The Young & the Restless’ abroad, and both soaps have recently been renewed."

  1. I will become a loyal NBC viewer both national and local affiliate if they do this! I will even buy a new sony TV to show my support and to watch my soaps on! 🙂 Please Sony! Buy them – SOS!

  2. Good move for Sony if they can make it work & can pick up the rights. I completely disagree with “experts” like Oprah Winfrey who try to convince viewers that it’s a read format and an entertainment relic. There’s no reason these shows can’t make good money. The simple fact is that 99% of the people who work in ad sales are lazy. They want programming that’s easy to sell which isn’t so bad in itself but when a whole department’s lack of motivation is the primary reason for major programming decisions, there’s a problem. This is why we get more judges on the air than there are actually hearing cases.
I’m not a soap fan but I am a television fan, so much so that I’ve made a career of one kind or another in the industry since I was 13 years old. At my first job as a producer for some shows on an indie station in Iowa I told the Powers That Be that there’s no such thing as a bad premise or a bad series, just bad execution. That’s as true today as it was then, probably more so.
I wouldove nothing more than to see Sony pick up these soaps and make a small fortune off of them. Hell, while they’re at it, why not bring back “Edge of Night” & “Dark Shadows”?

  3. See?? Now that is thinking outside the box! They need to hurry up and make a deal tho, before the cast and crew get scattered to the wind! My fingers are crossed.

  4. OMG! I hope this is true. I will watch all NBC shows, most importantly, Days of Our Lives if they save AMC!!! I will start to watch OLTL too! Please, Sony, make this happen. I bought a Hoover last week and will buy a Sony TV if this happens. Soap fans are the most loyal out there!!!

  5. I have already made the switch to NBC for primetime, and if they would do this, they would have a fan for life. I used to watch Days of Lives until it started airing opposite of ALL MY Children. Now I can have the best of both worlds. What a dynamic daytime line-up NBC would have if they take on this programming. They would gain a loyal fanbase that would generate better ratings for their network. Put these shows up against those replacement shows and ABC will be blown out of the water. Think of what could be made with syndication of the soaps. This is a win-win situations for the fans and the network.

  6. With all the lies and derogatory comments spewed by ABC/Disney I would love to see my soaps on another network. I have been loyal to my soaps and ABC for many years. I will continue to be loyal to my soaps and will be loyal to who ever helps me save them.

  7. Bring it on Sony TV you have the support of millions of AMC and OLTL viewers!

  8. I agree with everything that has been said here regarding the ABC soaps and that network’s heartless, thoughtless, and extremely short-sighted decision to cancel AMC and my favorite, OLTL!! I also echo everyone’s resolve to transfer loyalty to whatever entity that would be willing to step up and hurry to save them.
I applaud Hoover, Inc.–made in my family’s home state of Ohio, by the way–for dropping its sponsorship of ABC daytime programming….
By the way, ABC has already started to rub salt in our wounds by showing commercials for the shows slated to replace our soaps–and AMC is not even supposed to stop airing until September!!
