‘Sherlock Holmes’ Actor Dead at 78

The actor who played Watson in the 1980s television version of "Sherlock Holmes," has died at 78, reports Britain’s Telegraph

Edward Hardwicke took on the role in 1986, when the series was revived in "The Return of Sherlock Holmes," with the actor playing Watson in 11 episodes, the story says. He portrayed the character for such well-known Holmes stories as "The Hound of the Baskervilles."

He was paired with Jeremy Brett, who portrayed the famous fictional detective, the article notes.

Hardwicke, the son of actors, appeared in other television roles including "David Copperfield" in 2000 and "Agatha Christie’s Poirot" in 2004, the story says. His film credits include "Love Actually" in 2003 and "Elizabeth" in 1998, the piece notes.
