TiVo Chief Executive Tom Rogers said the $500 million settlement with Dish Network and EchoStar over a DVR patent "sends a very clear signal to others who may be willing to take the chance on litigation," according to Multichannel News.

The settlement "shows the value and strength of our enforcement program," Rogers said. He added that the settlement number was based on issues such as past damages and the continuing cost of litigation.

Dish and EchoStar wired TiVo $300 million on May 2, Rogers said, according to the piece. The remaining $200 million will be spread out over the next six years, which will help TiVo by giving it an ongoing licensing stream, Rogers said.
