A big-name actress has ended her discussions to join "Law & Order: SVU" as a replacement for Mariska Hargitay, reports TVLine.com.

The NBC show has been talking with Jennifer Love Hewitt about replacing Hargitay when she scales back her appearances in the second half of the season, the story notes. But those talks apparently have ended without a deal.

The show is also still looking for someone to fill Christopher Meloni’s role, and producers are considering looking for a second female lead who would play a detective to pair with Hargitay’s character in the early part of the show’s 13th season, the story notes.

  1. Both of these notions, Hewitt as a lead and two female leads, would be a mistake for SVU. Despite the relative success in recent years of some shows in replacing major leads, it does not normally work out due to viewer disappointment. I think this will most likely be the case for SVU now.

  2. They should re-introduce the lead character from NBC’s LIFE. I didn’t like the show very much, but I did like the character. He would be a good addition to the franchise.

  3. How about scrapping SVU and keeping the stylish (yet, from a native’s perspective, fairly realistic) Law & Order: L.A.? It’s much improved with the reworked casting and deserves more of a chance than it’s been given thus far.

  4. I agree with the previous poster. Law and Order feels a lot more fresh and realistic. The cinematography (lighting, camera, etc) also comes through as a better setup on L&O compared to many other police sets. What it needs is a raise in status which might attract bigger industry names.

  5. NBC should hire kelli giddish from CHASE… she would be a welcome and fresh addition to the show to replace mariska…. a southern detective transferred to the big apple…. too bad CHASE was cancelled… NBC didnt give it a real chance….
