Bunnies Too Hot for One NBC Affiliate, Which Vows to Pre-empt ‘The Playboy Club’ This Fall

One NBC affiliate says the network’s upcoming drama series “The Playboy Club” is inappropriate for its viewers and will be pre-empted, EW.com reports.

KSL-TV in Salt Lake City announced the decision on its website, saying it is “based on the station’s long-term policy to screen programming for material which significant portions of our audience may find objectionable.”

Mark Willes, station president and CEO, issued a statement saying: “The Playboy brand is known internationally. Everyone is clear what it stands for. We want to be sure everyone is clear what the KSL brand stands for, which is completely inconsistent with the Playboy brand.”

The station’s parent company is Bonneville International, which is owned by the Church of The Latter-day Saints. Station execs said they will try to find ways for the show to be seen in the Salt Lake City market on another outlet.

The “Mad Men”-style show is set at a Chicago Playboy club in the 1960s.

The story notes that the refusal by one station to air the show could trigger similar moves by other affiliates.

  1. I wonder if they also censor images of violence and mayhem from their own local newscasts.
If so, they’re the only station in America that doesn’t adhere to “If it bleeds it leads…”

  2. Didn’t this station also ban “Bob, The Devil, and God” and “Coupling”?
In a nutshell: if stations ban your shows, you’re going to be cancelled in short order.

  3. Good for them. We need more integrity and less pandering.

  4. Apparently the remote controls in Utah cannot change channels or turn the television off.
