The exit of actress Lisa Edelstein, who plays Cuddy on Fox’s "House," came as a surprise to creator/executive producer David Shore, reports Entertainment Weekly. Edelstein declined to renew her contract at the end of the show’s seventh season.

In fact, the dramatic season finale, in which Dr. House drove a car into Cuddy’s living room, would not have been the ender of choice if Shore hadn’t expected Edelstein back for season eight.

Shore told the publication, "It probably would have involved more closure on the character. I was really disappointed. I am still reeling from it, but we just started meeting a few days ago like we always do this time of year to try to map out the first half of the next season, and we are having some very frank discussions about what we are going to do.”

Shore revealed that if Edelstein would return for a few episodes next season, he has ideas for what to do with Cuddy. "It might be interesting to get her in for an episode or two somewhere to wrap up Cuddy–probably would make fans happy, but we have to plan, unfortunately, on her not coming back because there’s no indication that she would at this point.”

Shore confirmed that actress Olivia Wilde has signed on for episodes in season eight, reprising her role as 13.
